PLACEHOLDERS is a series of visual mixtapes by Kerry Ann Lee. This collection debuted at Whitespace Contemporary Art Gallery as part of the solo exhibition, Foreign Correspondence. Created on both sides of the dateline, Photographic ephemera recovered from disparate sources float, hang and coalesce as mementos from time spent in in ‘other places’. Portable and pictorial, these eclectic arrangements offer a look into life in transit and the archival impulses of settlers and sojourners. Lost and found artifacts, exotic vistas, karaoke and still lifes punctuate the domestic realm as subconscious souvenirs. The works evoke a lost-in-translation-ness of being at home elsewhere in places we know of, have heard about, or can never know, yet still try to understand and get sentimental about anyway.
